A mite belonging to the Arthropoda phylum, Arachnida class, Acarina order, Tetranychidae family. Summer-type females are dark red, while diapausing females are vermilion. Females are about 0.4 mm long, while males are about 0.3 mm long. Their eggs are white and transparent. They parasitize a variety of plants, including tea, pears, peaches, apples, cherries, citrus fruits, persimmons, grapes, papayas, mulberries, hops, cassava, eggplant, soybeans, kidney beans, taro, strawberries, melons, rice, and corn. They are particularly important pests of tea, and in tea fields they occur twice a year, from March to June and September to December. They generally overwinter as diapausing females, but in the south they can also occur as summer-type females or in a developmental stage other than the adult stage. They are distributed throughout Japan, from Hokkaido to Okinawa. [Mori Fansu] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
