〘Noun〙① Dancing Nembutsu, a dance in which farmers from Kasai in Musashi Province danced wildly down the streets of Edo to gongs, drums and flutes. It was also called Hosai Nembutsu because it resembled the dance of a mad monk named Hosai. Kasai Dance. ※Essays, Honcho Seji Danki (1733), vol. 5 "The way Kasai Nembutsu dances is not uniform. Sometimes it jumps to the left, sometimes to the right."② A type of Kabuki geza music. Said to be modelled on ①, this is a musical accompaniment played with drums and small Nembutsu gongs. It is used in lonely scenes such as farmhouses, embankments and temples, and in scenes where someone has been injured. 〘名〙① 武蔵国葛西の農民が鉦、太鼓に笛を交え、江戸の大路を狂ったように踊り回った踊り念仏。泡斎という狂人法師の踊りに似ているので、泡斎念仏ともいった。葛西踊り。※随筆・本朝世事談綺(1733)五「葛西念仏が躍る所一様ならず。左へ飛ぶあり、右へはねるあり」② 歌舞伎下座音楽の一つ。①を模したものといわれ、太鼓と小型の念仏鉦で打つ囃子(はやし)。農家、土手場、寺などの寂しい場面、一人が傷ついてからの立ち回りなどに用いる。また三味線を入れて合方として用いる。※歌舞伎・彩入御伽草(おつま八郎兵衛)(1808)辻堂の場「葛西念仏の鳴り物にて幕明く」
