Emmanuel Chabrier

Emmanuel Chabrier

French composer. Born in Ambers, Puy-de-Dôme. He studied law and became a civil servant, but he quickly became adept at composing and piano, and with the success of the operetta "The Star" (premiered in 1877), he devoted himself to music from the age of 39. He further established his fame with the orchestral rhapsody "Spain" (premiered in 1883), which was based on his impressions from a trip to Spain in 1882. His masterpiece is the opera "Guandolin" (premiered in 1886), which was influenced by Wagner's music dramas. His piano pieces such as "Pictorial Pieces" (premiered in 1881) and "Les Bourrées Caprices" (1891) have lively rhythms, witty and delicate expressions, and clear and bold harmonies. For this reason, he surpassed his contemporary composers and is sometimes considered a pioneer of the music of Satie and Ravel. He died in Paris.
