A Chinese monk from the late Ming Dynasty. Also known as the Eight Untold Masters and the Master of Beginnings. Along with Kanzan, Yunqi, and Daguan, he is counted among the Four Great Monks of the Ming Dynasty. A native of Mokudoku, Wu County (central Jiangsu Province), his surname was Zhong, given name Jiming, and style name Suhua. Influenced by Kanzan's Zen and Yunqi's Pure Land Buddhism, he worked to comprehensively reorganize Buddhism, mainly through Tendai and Vinaya. He rejected sectarian deviations and biases, and compiled the essentials of the Tripitaka into the "Ye Zang Zhijin." In his later years, he lived at the sacred peak of West Lake in Hangzhou, where his disciple Chengji compiled his theories into the "Lingfeng Sect Treatise."

中国，明末の僧。八不道人，始日大師ともよぶ。憨山（かんざん），雲棲，達観とあわせて，明代四高僧に数える。呉県木瀆（もくとく）(江蘇省中部)の人，姓は鍾，名は際明，字を素華という。憨山の禅，雲棲の浄土教をうけて，主として天台と律によって，仏教の総合再編につとめた。禅教離反，各宗偏向を排して，《大蔵経》の要義をあつめて，《閲蔵知津》をつくる。晩年，杭州西湖の霊峰にあり，門人成時がその説を集めて《霊峰宗論》を編する。
