Born: March 22, 1517, Chioggia Died: February 14, 1590. Venice. Italian composer and theorist. A student of A. Willaert. In 1565, he became conductor at St. Mark's Cathedral in Venice. He left behind several works, but what made him famous were his theoretical works Istitutioni harmoniche (1558) and Sopplimenti musicali (88), which dealt with the mathematical principles of music, counterpoint, modes, and other issues.
