Kaverin, Veniamin Aleksandrovich
Born: April 19, 1902, Pskov
[Died] May 2, 1989. Moscow Soviet writer. He was a member of the literary group "The Serapion Brothers" while studying at Leningrad University. His short story collections Mastera i podmaster'ya (1923) and Konets khazy (The Collapse of the Lair) are early masterpieces, but were criticized as "anti-Soviet." He wrote the novel Skandalist, ili vechera na Vasilievskom ostrove (1928) and moved to the side of the Soviet regime, and in works such as Dva kapitana (1938-44) and the trilogy Otkrytaya kniga (1949-56), he took up the theme of the suffering of intellectuals living in a turbulent era.

Kavelin, Konstantin Dmitrievich

Born: November 16, 1818, Petersburg
Died May 15, 1885. Historian, philosopher, and journalist from the St. Petersburg era. He lectured history at Moscow University and St. Petersburg University from the standpoint of the "State School," which emphasized the role of the state in history. Initially, he belonged to the Western European faction along with TN Granovsky and others, and supported the emancipation of serfs, but later he gradually showed a tendency toward Slavism.
