A Farewell to Arms

A Farewell to Arms

A representative full-length novel by the American novelist Hemingway. A masterpiece depicting war, love, and death, set against the backdrop of Italy and Switzerland during World War I. Published in 1929. A young American man, Frederick Henry, volunteers to join the Italian military medical transport corps and falls seriously in love with a British volunteer nurse, Catherine Barclay. Henry is caught up in the famous "Caporetto Rout," and realizes the meaninglessness and deception of patriotism, so he escapes. He escapes to Switzerland with Catherine, who is pregnant, but their blissful days there are torn apart by Catherine's stillbirth and sudden death. Based on the author's own war wounds and romantic experience that ended in heartbreak, this is a masterpiece of modern war literature, and has been called a modern version of Romeo and Juliet. The emptiness and cruelty of this world are depicted in a style that excludes sentimentality, which is known as hard-boiled. There are many deep meanings, and rain is particularly used symbolically. The closing line, "It was as if I was saying goodbye to the statue. After a while, I left the room, left the hospital, and walked back to the hotel in the rain," is a famous sentence that has been revised many times. This work has solidified the author's reputation.
