A town in Agatsuma County in western Gunma Prefecture. It occupies a plateau at the northeastern foot of Mt. Asama. The main settlement is an old market town along the Agatsuma River, and is served by the Agatsuma Line. It is the gateway to Mt. Asama and Kusatsu Onsen in Joshin'etsu Kogen National Park. Kitakaruizawa at the foot of Mt. Asama is a resort town with villas. Dairy farming and the cultivation of highland vegetables are thriving. Lumber is also produced here. Area: 133.85 km2 .
