A town in Agatsuma County in western Gunma Prefecture. It occupies a plateau at the northeastern foot of Mt. Asama. The main settlement is an old market town along the Agatsuma River, and is served by the Agatsuma Line. It is the gateway to Mt. Asama and Kusatsu Onsen in Joshin'etsu Kogen National Park. Kitakaruizawa at the foot of Mt. Asama is a resort town with villas. Dairy farming and the cultivation of highland vegetables are thriving. Lumber is also produced here. Area: 133.85 km2 . 群馬県西部，吾妻(あがつま)郡の町。浅間山の北東麓の高原地帯を占める。主集落は吾妻川に沿う古くからの市場町で，吾妻線が通じる。上信越高原国立公園の浅間山，草津温泉などの入口。浅間山麓の北軽井沢は別荘地，避暑地。酪農や高原野菜の栽培が盛ん。製材も行う。133.85km2。6017人（2010）。
