Measuring distances using radar. A predetermined measurement distance is used to measure distance, and the distance is calculated from the product of the radio wave speed and the round-trip time. When using pulse radar, the distance resolution is determined by the pulse width. When the pulse width is ^10-6 seconds, the length is 150 m. Measurement errors of tens of meters can occur due to the pulse width, reflectors, and reflections from nearby reflecting objects. An example of long-distance measurement is radar observation of planets in the field of astronomy. Planetary radar observation began in the early 1960s and has expanded to Venus, Mercury, and Mars.
