Modern ballet

Modern ballet
In contrast to classical ballet, modern ballet refers to ballets that are created freely and without the conventions of mime and grand pas de deux, which are basic elements of classical ballet. Whereas classical ballet was centered on female protagonists, modern ballet has equal roles and has also created ballets that focus on men. This tendency was evident in Diaghilev's Ballets Russes from 1909 onwards, and was pioneered by works by M. Fokine and V. Nijinsky. G. Balanchine and S. Lifar, who appeared in the later Ballets Russes, created ballets with new ideas in America and France.
