...In 1929, American cartoonist Elzie Crisler Segar (1894-1938) introduced a sailor in her newspaper comic strip Thimble Theater. He soon became the protagonist of a comic strip, and in 1933, Max Fleischer (the Fleischer brothers) made him into a series of short animated films. In this cartoon, he fights his rival Bluto (sometimes called Blutus) for his lover Olive Oyl, and his strength is emphasized.
