Division of labor in society

Japanese: 社会分業論 - しゃかいぶんぎょうろん（英語表記）De la division du travail social

A book by French sociologist Durkheim, published in 1893. It explores the causes of the development of the division of labor in society and considers the social and moral changes that result from this development. According to Durkheim, the division of labor progresses with the increase and concentration of population, the breakdown of segmental social structures, and the development of transportation. As a result, occupations gradually become more specialised, the uniform control of collective consciousness weakens, and social members become more heterogeneous and individualised. This means that the units of society become more heterogeneous and more interdependent, which creates a new kind of solidarity, organic solidarity.

フランスの社会学者デュルケームの著書。1893年刊行。社会における分業の発達の原因をさぐり，その発達によって生じる社会的･道徳的変化を考察する。デュルケームによれば，分業は人口の増大･集中，環節的社会構造の崩壊，交通手段の発達などにともなって進行する。その結果しだいに職能の専門化が進み，集合意識の斉一的な支配が弱まり，社会成員の異質化と個性化が生じる。それは社会の諸単位が異質化しつつ相互依存性を深めていくことを意味するわけで，そこに新たな連帯，〈有機的連帯〉がつくり出されていく。
