1800‐71 A Christian who represents the first generation of humanistic Arab nationalism born in Lebanon. He asserted that the inviolable value of the nation lies in the language of folk songs, tales, and unofficial history, rather than in the Arabic language of the Quran, and he broke away from the position of placing religion at the base of politics, calling for the unification of different religious populations through language (Arabic) as a common cultural bond.
