National Research Institute of Police Science

A central research institute attached to the National Police Agency that deals with scientific investigations, prevention of juvenile delinquency and other crimes, and prevention of traffic accidents. It is located in Kashiwa City, Chiba Prefecture. The institute also has an affiliated appraisal laboratory and a forensic science training institute. In addition to the General Affairs Department, there are six departments: Forensic Science I (Legal Biology), Forensic Science II (Physics, Engineering, etc.), Forensic Science III (Chemistry), Forensic Science IV (Information Science), Criminal Behavior Science (Juvenile Delinquency, Crime Prevention, etc.), and Traffic (Traffic Regulation, Traffic Safety, etc.), each of which conducts research and experiments. In addition, they respond to requests from prefectural police, prosecutors' offices, courts, etc. for appraisals and examinations that require advanced techniques.

警察庁に附置されている、科学捜査・少年非行その他犯罪の予防および交通事故の防止等に関する中央研究機関。千葉県柏(かしわ)市にある。同研究所には附属鑑定所、法科学研修所が附置されている。総務部のほかに、法科学第一（法生物学）、法科学第二（物理学、工学など）、法科学第三（化学）、法科学第四（情報科学）、犯罪行動科学（少年非行、犯罪予防など）および交通（交通規制、交通安全など）の6部が設けられており、それぞれ研究・実験を行っている。また、都道府県警察、検察庁、裁判所などから依頼を受けて、高度の技術を要する鑑定・検査にも応じている。
