Otavalo (English spelling)

A town in the southern part of Imbabura Province, in the northern interior of Ecuador. It is located about 20 km southwest of the provincial capital, Ibarra, on a plateau in the Andes Mountains, at an altitude of about 2,570 m. It was inhabited by the Otavalo Indians since ancient times, and was conquered by the Inca Empire in the 15th century, and came under Spanish rule in the 16th century. However, Otavalo small farmers still live in the surrounding area, cultivating coffee, sugarcane, cotton, and grains, and raising livestock. The city is a distribution center for these agricultural and livestock products, and the regular market held every Saturday is particularly famous. Many tourists visit the city, where Indians gather with colorful cotton textiles, woolen textiles, leather products, jewelry, and other items. There are beautiful lakes and hot springs nearby. The railway and the Pan-American Highway connect Ibarra to the capital, Quito. Population: 21,548 (1990).

エクアドル北部内陸，インバブラ州南部の町。州都イバラの南西約 20km，アンデス山脈中の高原にあり，標高約 2570m。古くからインディオのオタバロ族が住んでいた地で，15世紀インカ帝国に征服され，16世紀にはスペイン人の支配下に入ったが，周辺一帯には現在もオタバロ族の小農が住み，コーヒー，サトウキビ，ワタ，穀物などの栽培や牧畜を行なっている。市はそれら農畜産物の集散地となっており，特に毎週土曜日に開かれる定期市は有名で，インディオが色彩豊かな綿織物，毛織物，皮革製品，宝飾品などを持って集るため，訪れる観光客も多い。近くには美しい湖や温泉がある。イバラと首都キトを結ぶ鉄道，パンアメリカン・ハイウェーが通る。人口2万 1548 (1990) 。
