A naturalized plant of the Cucurbitaceae family that grows on roadsides and wastelands (illustration). It is an annual vine with stems that grow to several meters and use tendrils to climb up onto other plants. The leaves are alternate and long-stalked, shallowly lobed into 3-7 parts, 8-13 cm long and 13 cm wide, and have rough surfaces with small white projections. It is monoecious, and produces stalked inflorescences from the base of the leaves from summer to autumn. The male flowers are yellowish-white and cone-shaped, about 1 cm in diameter. The stamens are fused together, and the long, twisted anthers are clustered in a globular shape at the end of the style that protrudes from the center of the flower.
