Born: May 3, 1886 in Rouen
[Died] May 30, 1971. Paris. French composer and organist. He studied under his father, an organist in Rouen, and later under C. Widor, and in 1934 succeeded him as organist at the Saint-Sulpice Cathedral in Paris. Since performing all of JS Bach's organ pieces from memory in 1920, he has been known as an outstanding Bach performer and a master of improvisers, and his works include concertos and symphonies for the organ. He is the author of Traité d'improvisation à l'orgue (1926) and Méthode d'orgue (27).

[Died] October 6, 1889. Le Radan French landscape painter. Belonging to the Barbizon School, he became one of the founders of modern French landscape painting. He started out as a ceramic painter in Sèvres. In 1831, he exhibited his first seven landscape paintings at the Salon. In 1834, he traveled to England and was strongly influenced by J. Constable and R. Bonington. In his later years, he began to create dramatic landscapes, and his works became more typified. His representative work is "Setting Sun after the Storm" (1851, Musee d'Orsay).

フランスの風景画家。バルビゾン派に属し，近代フランス風景画の創始者の一人となる。初めセーブルで陶器の絵付工として出発。 1831年サロンに7枚の風景画を初出品。 34年イギリスに旅行して，J.コンスタブルと R.ボニントンから強い影響を受けた。晩年になるにつれてドラマチックな風景画を創作する方向に向い，作品は類型化していった。代表作『嵐のあとで沈む太陽』 (1851，オルセー美術館) など。
