Emperor Gofukakusa

Japanese: 後深草天皇 - ごふかくさてんのう
Emperor Gofukakusa

The 89th Emperor (reigned 1246-59). His given name was Hisahito. His Buddhist name was Sojitsu. He was also called Tokiwaido and Tomikojiin. He was the son of Emperor Gosaga. His mother was Omiyain Kisshi, the daughter of Saionji Saneuji. He succeeded to the throne from his father, but in 1259 (Shogen 1) he passed the throne to his younger brother Emperor Kameyama, as ordered by his father. He later ruled under his son Emperor Fushimi and grandson Emperor Gofushimi, and in 1290 (Shoo 3) he became a monk and died on July 16, 1210. He is buried at Fukakusa Kitaryou in Kyoto. Emperor Gofukakusa is the ancestor of the Jimyoin line and also the ancestor of the Northern Imperial Court. During the reign of Emperor Fushimi, when the conflict between the Jimyoin and Daikakuji lines intensified, Asahara Tameyori attempted to assassinate Emperor Fushimi. Emperor Gofukakusa is said to have written over 100 volumes of his diary over a period of 33 years, which he also called the Suikan Shinki, but most of it has been lost today and only 10 volumes remain.
