According to this theory, the perceived image of an object is the surface of the object that is peeled off and enters the sensory organs. The Hellenistic Gnostics (especially the Egyptian Gnostics) asked how God could be recognized despite the infinite distance between God and the world, and believed that the manifestation of God is an outflow (Greek aporrhoia, Latin emanatio) or emanation (Greek probolē) from God, who is a source of water or light. The Neoplatonist Plotinus also used this metaphor to explain the relationship between the One and the world, but unlike the Gnostics, he emphasized that outflow does not mean a decrease in the substance of the One. *Some of the terminology explanations that mention "emanatio" are listed below.
