Otokuniji Temple

Japanese: 乙訓寺 - おとくにでら

This Shingon Buddhism temple is located in Nagaokakyo, Kyoto Prefecture. Its mountain name is Daijisan. It is also called Houoji. According to temple legend, it was built at the request of Empress Suiko, but recent excavations have uncovered remains of a building with roof tiles from the Hakuho period, suggesting the temple was founded in 1568. The first written records show that Crown Prince Sawara was imprisoned in this temple in 785 (Enryaku 4), the year after the capital was moved to Nagaokakyo, in connection with the assassination of Fujiwara no Tanetsugu. Kukai lived here as a betto (chief priest) from 811 (Kōnin 2) until the following year. Saichō also visited during that time. During the time of Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, the temple was affiliated with Nanzenji, but was destroyed by fire in 1568 (Eiroku 11).

京都府長岡京市にある真言宗豊山派の寺。山号は大慈山。法皇寺ともいう。寺伝では，推古天皇の勅願というが，最近の発掘調査では，白鳳期の瓦を伴う建物跡が発見され，創建年代を示唆する。文献では，長岡京遷都の翌785年(延暦4)藤原種継の暗殺事件に関連して皇太子早良（さわら）親王がこの寺に幽閉されたとみえるのが初見。811年(弘仁2)から翌年まで空海が別当として居住。その間，最澄が訪ねてきたこともあった。足利義満のとき，南禅寺末に属したが，1568年(永禄11)に兵火で焼失。
