Sekishō Line

Japanese:
Sekishō Line

The name of the Hokkaido Railway Company (JR Hokkaido) line that runs through southern Hokkaido. The line is 132.4 km long, from Minami-Chitose (renamed Chitose Airport when New Chitose Airport Station opened) to Shin-Yubari to Shintoku (24.1 km of which is shared with the Nemuro Main Line) and is single track and non-electrified. It crosses the Hidaka and Yubari mountains, which are the backbone of Hokkaido, and connects the Ishikari Plain in central Hokkaido with the Tokachi Plain in eastern Hokkaido. It is particularly a part of Hokkaido's trunk railway network, shortening the distance between New Chitose Airport, the gateway to Hokkaido, and the central city of Sapporo to eastern Hokkaido. In addition to express trains between Sapporo and Kushiro (or Obihiro), local trains run between Minami-Chitose and Shin-Yubari. In October 1981, the sections between Minami-Chitose and Oiwake, and between Shin-Yubari (renamed when Momijiyama Station opened) and Kamiochiai Signal Station were opened, and at the same time the existing Yubari Line section between Oiwake, Shin-Yubari and Yubari (opened in 1892 by Hokkaido Colliery Railway, nationalized in 1906) was incorporated. The section that crosses the Hidaka Mountains is rugged mountainous terrain in the upper reaches of the Mukawa and Saru rivers, has a sparse population and long distances between stations. There are only two intermediate stations on the 89.4 km section between Shin-Yubari and Shintoku, and a total of 12 signal stations are required along the way for train switching. Additionally, as it passes through rugged mountainous terrain, it is also famous for having many tunnels and bridges, and the three longest tunnels on Hokkaido's conventional railway lines (Shinnoborigawa Tunnel, 5,825 meters) are on this line. In 1987, following the privatization of Japanese National Railways (JNR), it became part of JR Hokkaido. The Yubari Branch Line, which ran 16.1 kilometers between Shin-Yubari and Yubari, was abolished on April 1, 2019 due to a decrease in users.
