Bernini, P.

…An architect, sculptor, painter, and theater designer representing the Italian Baroque period. His father, Pietro Bernini (1562-1629), was a Florentine and skilled mannerist. He was born in Naples, where his father worked, and moved to Rome with his father in 1605. While his father worked for Pope Paul V at the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, his son Lorenzo's precocious talent was recognized by the pope and his nephew, Cardinal Scipione Borghese. He worked for the cardinal from 1619 to 1625, producing his masterpieces as a young man: Apollo and Daphne, The Rape of Proserpine, and David (all of which are on display in the Borghese Gallery). …
