A verse treatise by French poet and critic Nicolas Boileau, published in 1674. Based on Horace, it advocated the worship of nature, reason, antiquity, and artistic perfection, and established the aesthetics of classical literature. It reigned as a literary code until the French Revolution, and had a great influence on neighboring European countries.
