Naukenin - petitioner

Japanese: 名請人 - なうけにん
Naukenin - petitioner

A person who is registered in the land survey book. They are also called Takaukenin or Saokenin. In land surveys from the end of the Sengoku period through the Edo period, they were registered in the land survey book as the holders of the bunmai (rice share), or kokudaka (rice yield), established for each plot of land, and were obligated to pay the annual tax for that kokudaka. Their nature and the contents of their rights and obligations changed slightly over the years. In addition, under the manor system, the person who was registered in the land survey book was called Myoukenin, and was obligated to pay the annual tax.
