Japanese: エゾユキウサギ(英語表記)Lepus timidus ainu; Ezo snow hare
Lepus timidus ainu; Ezo snow hare
Order Lagomorpha, Family Leporidae. Body length 55cm, weight about 3kg. Similar to mainland hares, but larger in body and feet. Rounded head, short ears, and short tail. Hair grows down to the soles of the feet, allowing the rabbit to spread its toes wide apart. Body color changes with the seasons; summer fur is gray-brown on the back, and winter fur is pure white except for the dark brown tips of the ears. Inhabits Hokkaido, and is common in grasslands and sparse forests from plains to mountains. Feeds on bark, twigs, and grasses. Outside Japan, a separate subspecies is found from Siberia to northern Europe.
