A caravanserai, a type of inn commonly found in the Middle East, derived from the Persian kārvānsarāy. Two types can be distinguished based on their commercial function. The first type was a pure caravanserai built along the roads, whose primary function was to provide lodging for merchants, pilgrims, and travelers. In Arabic, this type of inn was often called khan. If built by the waqf (donated property) of the government, royalty, nobility, or merchants, people could stay there free of charge. The oldest ones date back to the Umayyad period, but they were actively built from the 13th century onwards.

中東に広くみられる隊商宿のことで，ペルシア語のカールバーンサラーユkārvānsarāyに由来。商業機能のうえから二つのタイプが認められる。　第1は街道沿いに建てられた純然たる隊商宿で，商人，巡礼者，旅人を宿泊させることに基本的な機能があった。アラビア語ではこの種のものをハーンkhānということが多かった。政府･王侯貴族･商人のワクフ(寄進財産)によって建てられた場合には無料で泊まることができた。最古のものはウマイヤ朝期にまでさかのぼるが，13世紀以降盛んに建設された。
