This is a procedure to remove the horns from calves and kids one or two weeks after birth, making them easier to manage. They become milder, but it does not affect lactation or reproduction. The method of dehorning is to lay the animal on its side, cut the hair from the area where the horns will grow, rub a rod of caustic potash on it to break down the horn tissue, and then apply tincture of iodine or similar to the scar to disinfect it. Another method is to burn it with an electric iron. This was mainly done on dairy cows, but as group rearing in drive-in and open barns has become more common for beef cattle, dehorning has also become common.
