Fern moss (English spelling)

Japanese: シノブゴケ(忍蘚) - シノブゴケ（英語表記）fern moss

A general term for mosses in the Thuidium genus of the Thuidium family. There are about 150 species worldwide, and 15 in Japan. The plant is creeping and finely branched like pinnates. The Japanese name is a reference to the delicate, flat-branched form that resembles the leaves of the Thuidium fern. The English name is also based on the plant's external appearance. The stems are stiff, and in addition to the normal leaves, they are densely covered with hairy leaves. The leaves are small and have a clear central vein. The capsule is cylindrical and either inclined or drooping. The capsule teeth are well developed and arranged in two rows, one inside and one outside. T. kanedae Sak. is a common species in low mountain areas throughout the country.

シノブゴケ科，シノブゴケ属Thuidiumの蘚類の総称。世界に約150種，日本に15種ある。植物体は匍匐（ほふく）し，細かく羽状に分枝する。和名は平面的に分枝した繊細な姿をシダ植物のシノブの葉に見立てたもの。英名も同じく植物体の外形に基づく。茎は堅く，通常の葉のほかに毛葉（もうよう）を密生する。葉は小さく，中央脈は明りょう。蒴（さく）は円筒状で傾斜または下垂する。蒴歯はよく発達し，内外2列に並ぶ。アソシノブゴケ(トヤマシノブゴケ)T.kanedae Sak.は全国の低山地の普通種。
