1602‐74 French painter born in Brussels. Also known as Champagne. He initially trained as a landscape painter, and in 1621 he moved to Paris to work with Poussin on the decoration of the Luxembourg Palace. In 1628 he became court painter to Queen Marie de' Medici, and produced works for Louis XIII and Richelieu, as well as the frescoes on the ceiling of the Sorbonne (1641-44). From this time onwards he came under the influence of the strict Catholic sect of Jansenism, and a pure style of painting became dominant.
