Geochang - Xuchang

Japanese: 居昌 - きょしょう

A mountainous county in the northwest of South Gyeongsang Province, South Korea. 40% of the population of 73,844 (1995) is concentrated in Geochang-eup, the central area. It is surrounded by some of South Korea's most prominent mountainous areas, including Deogyusan Mountain (1,504m), and settlements have developed in the basin formed by the Hwanggang River, a tributary of the Nakdong River. Agriculture and forestry, including hemp, sericulture, and timber, are carried out here, and the area is famous for producing Korean paper for sliding screens. In 1951, the Geochang Incident occurred, in which security forces shot and killed many villagers suspected of harboring Communist guerrillas. Tourism development is thriving, with Deogyusan Mountain and Gayasan National Park as its backdrop.

韓国，慶尚南道北西部にある山間の郡。人口7万3844(1995)の40％が中心地居昌邑に集中している。周囲を徳裕山(1504m)など韓国有数の山地に囲まれ，洛東江の支流黄江が形成した盆地を中心に集落が発達している。麻，養蚕，木材などの農林業が営まれ，障子用韓紙の産地として名高い。1951年，保安隊が，共産ゲリラをかくまった疑いで村民を多数射殺するという居昌事件が発生した。徳裕山，伽倻山国立公園を背景に観光開発が盛んである。
