People of all ages and social classes dance in a circle with the dead and skeletons, allegorically expressing the idea that "death comes to all." This has been a frequent artistic theme since the late Middle Ages, but the oldest known example of a plastic representation is a mural in the tomb of the Basilica of the Innocents in Paris around 1424 (destroyed in 1699). This spread throughout Europe with the publication of a woodcut by Guyot Marchand in 1685. There are two main types: (1) one in which the living and the dead dance hand in hand, and (2) one that lacks the dance motif and replaces the dead with skeletons. The latter type is best known for its woodcut by Hans Holbein the Younger, published in 1538. Dance of Death |
