A type of Japanese wind instrument. It is also called "shino" for short, or "takebue" (bamboo flute). It is a flute that is blown horizontally and is used in folk performing arts such as Nagauta Hayashi, Kabuki geza music, and Sato Kagura. It is so named because the tube is made from bare Shinodake bamboo (medake). The mouthpiece is near the top end and usually has seven finger holes, but six-hole flutes are also widely used in folk performing arts. Many of the flutes used in Nagauta Hayashi and Kabuki geza music have both ends wrapped in birch and coated with lacquer to prevent cracking. Also, flutes of different lengths and different tunes are usually prepared to match the tune of the song and shamisen. In folk performing arts, shinobue flutes unique to each region are often used.
