Tabarestan (English spelling)

Japanese: タバレスターン（英語表記）Tabarestān

A region of Iran on the southeastern coast of the Caspian Sea. It borders Gorgan to the east, Gilan to the west, and the Elburz Mountains to the south. It is the old name of Māzanderān, and its name comes from the fact that it was the home of the Tapur tribe in ancient times. It was called this name until the 13th century. Because it was not politically important, it was the last of the former Sassanid territories to be Islamized, and it maintained its independence until the mid-8th century, more than a century after the other regions were conquered by the Arabs. During the late Abbasid period, Āmol was its capital, and under the Tahirid dynasty, Sāri was its capital.
