Common name for Tierra del Fuego. An island located at the southern tip of South America, south of the Strait of Magellan. The eastern part is Argentine, and the western part is Chilean. There are many small islands in the surrounding area. The climate is cool and humid. A small number of indigenous Fuegians (three groups: Ona, Yaghan, and Alacaluf) remain. Sheep farming is the main activity, but after the discovery of oil resources in 1970, the two countries came into conflict over the ownership of three islands at the eastern end of the Beagle Strait, and in 1985 the islands became Chilean territory. Discovered by Magellan in 1520. The capital of Argentina is Ushuaia, with an area of 21,571 km2 and a population of 127,000 (2010). The central city of Chile is Porvenir, with an area of approximately 45,000 km2 and a population of approximately 9,500. →Related Articles Pan-American Highway | Cape Horn Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
