Damal - damaru (English spelling) amaru

An hourglass-shaped, double-sided drum from India and Tibet. A string with a metal or cork ball attached to it is wound around the narrow part of the body, and the drum is swung from side to side to hit the ball on the membrane and produce sound. Its size ranges from 8 to 30 centimeters, and it comes in a variety of forms, with some having balls on both ends of the string, others only on one side, and some with and without a cloth handle. The body is made of wood, pottery, or bronze, and in Tibet there is even a drum with two human skulls attached back to back. It is said to have belonged to the god Shiva in Hindu mythology, and was originally used in religious ceremonies and magic, but today it is mainly used by street performers.
