The capital of Mogilev Oblast in eastern Belarus. A river port city on the Dnepr River, about 180 km east of the capital Minsk. Founded as a fortress in 1267, it became a city in 1526. For a long time it flourished as a commercial center, but after the revolution, industry developed. The main industries are machinery (automobiles, motors), steel, leather, sewing, and food, but the chemical industry has also developed with the construction of a synthetic fiber manufacturing complex. There is a pedagogical university, a mechanical engineering university, and a local museum. Although it was heavily damaged in World War II, four cathedrals built in the 16th and 17th centuries remain. It is a railway junction on the highway connecting the Baltic Sea region and Ukraine.
