This is an acute infectious disease of horses, caused by Streptococcus streptococcus. It causes catarrh in the nasal and pharyngeal mucosa of the upper respiratory tract, and suppurative inflammation in the adjacent lymph nodes, and is prone to metastasis to other lymph nodes, guttural pouches, and joint capsules. Mortality is low if treated early. Early administration of penicillin is effective for treatment. Young horses are highly susceptible, and adult horses can get the disease, but it is mild.
