Futon - Futon

Japanese:
Futon - Futon

A novella by Tayama Katai. Published in Shinshosetsu in September 1907 (Meiji 40). Included in the short story collection Kataishu, published the following year by Eifusha. When middle-aged literary scholar Takenaka Tokio is feeling bored with his job at a magazine company and his married life, Yokoyama Yoshiko, a student at the missionary school Kobe College, is brought to the school by her father. Takenaka likens the woman to Anna Mahr, the female student in Hauptmann's Lonely People, and is attracted to her intelligence and beauty, feeling intense jealousy towards Yoshiko's lover, Tanaka Hideo. Feeling increasingly criticized, he hides behind his guardianship, sends the woman back to her country, buries his face in the futon she left behind, and cries over his sexual desire, sorrow, and despair. Hogetsu described it as a "man of flesh" and a frank "confession," and positioned it as a naturalistic work.
