A port city on the Black Sea on the northern coast of Turkey's Asia Minor Peninsula. Capital of Sinop Province. Population 30,502 (2000). It has a small shipbuilding industry and exports tobacco and timber, but the city has lost its port power to Samsun and is lacking in vitality. Its history dates back to the 13th century BC, and in the 7th century BC it became a colony of Miletus. In the 2nd century BC it was owned by the Kingdom of Pontus, and at one time it flourished as its capital. It is the birthplace of the ancient philosopher Diogenes. It has a citadel dating back to the Byzantine Empire in the 5th century. [End line] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
