The city is located in the northern part of Fukuoka Prefecture, in the basin in the northern part of the Sangun Mountains, and faces the Genkai Sea. It includes Oshima Island offshore. It was incorporated as a city in 1981. Akama, which flourished as one of the 21 post towns in Chikuzen in the early modern period, and Togo, the administrative center of Munakata District, are the central urban areas. The Kagoshima Main Line and National Route 3 run through the city. It was a farming area where rice was the main industry, but with the electrification of the Kagoshima Main Line in 1961, it became a commuting area for Fukuoka City and Kitakyushu City, and large-scale housing complexes were developed. In 1966, Fukuoka University of Education and Tokai University (Junior College) were opened, and it developed into a residential and academic town, resulting in a rapid increase in population. Hetsumiya Shrine of Munakata Taisha Shrine is located in the north. Genkai Town, Munakata District, was incorporated in April 2003, and Oshima Village, Munakata District, was incorporated in March 2005. It has an area of 119.91 km2.
