As Kaibara Ekiken wrote in his Nihon Shakumei (1700) that sardines are "a lowly fish," the idea that sardines are lowly has existed among the Japanese since ancient times. However, sardines have been eaten at the Imperial Court since the Muromachi period, and the court ladies' words "murasaki" and "omura" mean that they are superior to sweetfish (ayu). The word red sardine appears frequently in Saikaku's Ukiyo Zoushi.
