Public part-time educational institutions for working young people in the UK. Established by the Education Act of 1944 (Butler Act). The Act required all local education authorities to establish and operate free educational centres offering physical education, practical training and vocational training for those aged between the age of completion of compulsory education and 18 who are not receiving full-time education (secondary education or higher). The aim is to develop the various aptitudes and abilities of working young people and to nurture healthy citizens, and the minimum number of days of attendance per year is set at 44 weeks (330 hours), either one day a week or two half-days each.
