An old town in the center of the Osumi Peninsula, Kimotsuki District, Kagoshima Prefecture. The central city area developed as a castle town for the Kimotsuki clan in the Middle Ages. In addition to rice and tobacco, the town is prolific in producing Ponkan oranges. Pigs and beef cattle are also raised. Hami, facing Shibushi Bay, was the base of operations for the Wako pirates in the Middle Ages, and is part of the Nichinan Coast Quasi-National Park. The remains of Takayama Castle and Tsukasaki Kofun Group (both historic sites) are located here. In July 2005, the town was incorporated as Kimotsuki Town by merging with Uchinoura Town, Kimotsuki District. Area: 128.75 km2 . Population: 14,920 (2003). 鹿児島県肝属(きもつき)郡,大隅半島中部の旧町。中心市街は中世肝付氏の城下町として発達。米,タバコのほか,ポンカンを多産。養豚,肉牛飼育も行われる。志布志湾に面する波見(はみ)は中世の倭寇(わこう)の根拠地で,日南海岸国定公園に属する。高山城跡,塚崎古墳群(ともに史跡)がある。2005年7月肝属郡内之浦町と合併し町制,肝付町となる。128.75km2。1万4920人(2003)。
