An ancient Phoenician city-state on the Mediterranean coast in southwestern Lebanon. Its current name is Saida. It flourished in the 14th to 13th centuries BC and held leadership among the Phoenician cities. It was later occupied by the Assyrian and Neo-Babylonian Empires and became a battlefield during the Crusades. It was destroyed by Islamic forces and the Mongols in the 13th century, and was a commercial center of Türkiye in the 17th and 18th centuries.
