American animal writer and artist. Born in Scotland, he spent several years from age six in the Canadian countryside, where he became familiar with nature. He later studied natural history and painting in Toronto, London, and Paris, and moved to the United States in 1893. From a young age, he wrote animal stories based on his observations of wild animals, and in 1898, he published "Wild Animals I Have Known," a collection of eight stories, which made him famous and made the book an enduring bestseller. He continued to publish masterpieces of animal literature, known as "Wild Animals I Have Known," and in 1928 he received the John Burroughs Medal. His works are accompanied by many illustrations that he drew himself. He also contributed to nature conservation and nature education for young people, and participated in the founding of the Boy Scouts, serving as its first leader from 1910 to 1916. In addition to his animal literature, he wrote a more naturalistic work on the ecology of animals, The Lives of Hunting Animals (1925-1928), and an autobiography, In the Footsteps of an Artist-Naturalist (1940).
