The capital of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina in northern Yugoslavia. A transportation hub and an important port city on the Danube River. Population 180,000 (1991). Hungarian name Újvidék. The inhabitants are of many ethnicities, including Serbs, Hungarians, Croats, Slovaks, and Romanians. At the end of the 17th century, Serbs who fled the oppression of the Ottoman Turks moved north in large numbers and began to cross the Danube into Hungarian territory.
