Sun Moon Lake

Japanese: 日月潭 - にちげつたん

Sun Moon Lake is a lake located in the mountains at 764m above sea level in Yuchi Township, Nantou County, on the outskirts (about 76km southeast) of Tainan City in the southwest of Taiwan. It is also read as "Li Yue Tan". It is the largest natural lake in Taiwan (circumference 24km), and was named Sun Moon Lake because the north side is shaped like the sun and the south side is shaped like the moon. It is also called Ming Tan (明潭) from the characters for sun and moon. The area centered on this lake is a scenic spot representative of central Taiwan, and is designated as a national scenic area. Buses to Sun Moon Lake depart from Shuili Station on the Jiji Line, Taipei, and Taichung.

台湾島西南部の台南（臺南、タイナン）市の郊外（東南約76km）、南投県魚池郷の海抜764mの山中にある湖。◇「リーユエタン」とも読む。台湾で最も大きな天然湖（周囲24km）で、北側が太陽（日）の形、南側が月の形をしていることから日月潭と名づけられた。日と月の字から「明潭」（ミンタン）とも呼ばれている。この湖を中心とした一帯は、台湾島中部を代表する景勝地で、国立風景区に指定されている。集集線水里駅、台北、台中より日月潭行きのバスが出ている。
