Grand Duke of Moscow and Russian Emperor (reigned 1533-1584). He began to rule personally in 1547, and used special parliaments and the Oprichnina system to oppress the boyars and strengthen his imperial power. He conquered Kazan and Astrakhan, and in 1558 started the Livonian War in search of an outlet to the Baltic Sea. He was the first to call himself Tsar, and is said to have been given the title Grozny (the Terrible) because of his extreme reign of terror, but the original meaning of the name was "strict." He was succeeded by Fyodor I, the son of his first wife, Anastasia.

モスクワ大公，ロシア皇帝（在位1533年―1584年）。1547年に親政を始め，特別議会やオプリチニナ制度で大貴族を圧迫し，帝権の強化を図った。カザン，アストラハンを征服し，バルト海への出口を求めて1558年リボニア戦争を起こした。初めてツァーリと自称し，極端な恐怖政治のゆえに〈グローズヌイ（雷帝）〉と称されたとされるが，元来は〈厳格な〉の意味である。最初の妃アナスタシアとの子であるフョードル１世が後を継いだ。
