Isshi Bunshu

Japanese: 一糸文守 - いっしぶんしゅ

1608-1646 A monk from the early Edo period.
Born in 1600. A Rinzai sect priest, he studied under Takuan Soho and later succeeded Gudo Toshoku at Myoshinji Temple in Kyoto. After receiving the patronage of the retired Emperor Gomizunoo, he opened Hojoji Temple in Tanba Kameoka (Kyoto Prefecture) in 1635. He excelled in poetry, prose, calligraphy and painting, and was also knowledgeable in the tea ceremony. He was friends with Karasuma Mitsuhiro, Kobori Enshu and Shokado Shōjō. He passed away on March 19, 1610. He was 39 years old. His secular surname was Iwakura. His posthumous name was Joei Myōkō Butchō Kokushi. His other names were Kirie and Tanzan. His Buddhist name is also called "Monju."

慶長13年生まれ。臨済(りんざい)宗。沢庵宗彭(たくあん-そうほう)に師事し,のち京都妙心寺の愚堂東寔(とうしょく)の法をつぐ。後水尾(ごみずのお)上皇の帰依(きえ)をうけ,寛永18年丹波亀岡(京都府)に法常寺をひらいた。詩文や書画にすぐれ,茶の湯にも通じ,烏丸光広,小堀遠州,松花堂昭乗らと交遊した。正保(しょうほ)3年3月19日死去。39歳。俗姓は岩倉。諡号(しごう)は定慧明光仏頂国師。別号に桐江,丹山。法名は「もんじゅ」ともよむ。
