Governor of Egypt during the Orthodox Caliphate and Umayyad Dynasty. He was hostile to Islam in Mecca, but converted to Islam when he came to Medina in 629. In the autumn of 633, he participated in the conquest of Syria as a general. In December 639, he suddenly moved to Egypt and founded the military city of Fustat, the forerunner of Cairo, in 642. He was dismissed as governor by Caliph Uthman, but served as Muawiyah's right-hand man during the First Civil War (656-661), contributed to the founding of the Umayyad Dynasty, and returned to his position as governor of Egypt.
